1) What Is Pop Warner?
Pop Warner is the only national youth football and cheerleading organization in the USA. It is also the only national youth sports organization to require satisfactory academic progress to participate.
2) How Big Is Pop Warner?
Pop Warner has leagues in 38 states, plus Japan, Russia and Mexico. In the US during the 1998 season, about 300,000 boys and girls participated in Pop Warner.
3) How Big Is Our Conference ?
In 2001 the Southeastern Virginia Pop Warner Football Conference consisted of nine (12) Associations which had a total 56 Football Teams and 52 Cheering Squads!
4) How Do I Find Out If I Can Play Flag/Tackle Football?
Pop Warner has stringent safety rules, one of which is an age-weight schematic. (see Table Below) This system insures maximum safety, since players will be evenly matched in size and physical maturity. We'll be glad to let you know if you qualify by age and weight -- just by age for cheerleading. Pop Warner also has a "no-cut" rule, which means that tryouts aren't allowed. "First-come, first-on" is the way it works.
5)How Does Pop Warner Differ from City League Teams/Squads?
We would never make the claim that we are better than any City sponsored program when it comes to the safety of the children. However what Pop Warner does offer is "end of season play". When City League plays their last game the Seasons over, a Champion is declared and everybody goes home. When Pop Warner declares a Champion, the FUN is just beginning!!!! Once the Football Teams and Cheer/Dance Squads compete for the respective championships of their Leagues or Conferences, the League winners then compete for their Regional Championship (there are eight (8) Regions in the US). The Regional Champions in football, and the Regional Champions/Runners-Up in Cheerleading/dance compete at the National Championships/Pop Warner Super Bowl. The 1999 Pop Warner Super Bowl was held at Walt Disney World in the brand new Wide World of Sports Complex December 8th through the 11th.
In addition, those that qualify compete in "Post Season Bowl Games". This is an opportunity for our kids to gain a little more experience against opponents from outside our Region.
